Château du Freundstein

Castle Freundstein rises to 984m above sea level, is the highest of the castles of Alsace. Built in the late 13th century, it came under the Bishop of Strasbourg and Murbach Abbey, before being given in fief to the family Waldner Freundstein, still owns today. The castle was not spared by history, heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1356, multiple attacks, fires and bombings during the war. It is a historical monument since 1922. Today only some ruins and access to the castle is perilous.
