DESCRIPTIF
Here on the Alsatian wine route, between fertile hills and the majestic silhouette of the Vieil Armand, you can explore the small village of Hartmannswiller. Although damaged during the Great War due to its proximity to the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield, this town still boasts a significant heritage with its fortified cemetery. An impressive defence construction, this is the only Alsatian example of this type of architecture along with that of Hunawihr.
Along the edge of the wall, in its grassy setting, you can see the Château de Hartmannswiller. Close to the cemetery, it was doubtless the seat of the family that gave the area its name: the "Hartmanswilrs".
In its narrow streets with their numerous rural crosses and fountains, many old houses are worth a visit. The village, 90% destroyed during the First World War, still houses small remarkable dwellings with lintel doors dating from the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. These houses, like the XVth century church, bestow an authentic charm on the old part of the village.
